In the realm of politics, individuals who possess a genuine thirst for knowledge and a commitment to personal growth are rare. However, Sheriff Oborevwori, immediate past Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly and current Governor of Delta State, embodies these qualities at his very core.
I had the privilege of observing his dedication during the Advanced Leadership and Communication training at SOARS, University of London, from August 1-4, 2022. This workshop was organized for the members of the State House of Assembly, and I was fortunate to be among the nominated aides who participated.
The leadership training provided a comprehensive understanding of various governance and workplace issues, serving as an eye-opener for all attendees. Personally, it felt like an academic journey that I had embarked on August 1, 2022, when I began a program at Nexford University in Washington, United States of America.
During our time in London, I had the opportunity to interact with every member of the Delta State House of Assembly as a co-learner, sharing classrooms, dining halls, and even the streets of London on our way to the University campus. It was a lighthearted and bonding experience for both the aides and the honourable members, as we traveled together from Asaba Airport through Abuja to London Heathrow and back to Nigeria.
In London, I witnessed firsthand Sheriff Oborevwori’s unwavering dedication to learning and relentless pursuit of knowledge. Despite his considerable achievements and responsibilities as the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly then, he remains ever ready to learn.
One might have assumed that as the Speaker, he would be content with his extensive knowledge and experience in politics and legislative expertise, but that was not the case. He consistently sought opportunities for growth and development, recognizing that there was always something new to learn. This commitment was manifestly evident during plenary sessions, where he encouraged extensive discussions on the floor of the House.
As a co-learner with Sheriff Oborevwori at SOARS, University of London, I was truly impressed by his dedication to expanding his knowledge base. Despite his demanding role as Speaker, he actively engaged in discussions, asked thought-provoking questions, and eagerly absorbed new information. His humility and openness to different perspectives created an environment conducive to meaningful intellectual exchange, benefiting all participants.
Sheriff Oborevwori’s notable trait is his ability to remind his colleagues that learning is a lifelong process. In a world that often emphasizes hierarchy and the accumulation of power, his steadfast belief in the importance of continuous learning is refreshing. By encouraging his fellow politicians and associates to embrace the concept of daily learning, he fostered an atmosphere of growth and improvement for everyone around him.
Looking ahead, it is evident that Sheriff Oborevwori’s unwavering dedication to learning will continue to serve him well in his political career as Governor. He is not afraid to ask questions to gain a deeper understanding of the issues at hand. Most importantly, he doesn’t carry himself around like a Mr. Know-all, because he is the Speaker.
Rather, he graciously recognizes that seeking knowledge is not a sign of weakness but rather a testament to his commitment to making informed decisions and effectively serving the people and has willingly, with honest simplicity, submitted himself to knowledge acquisition, as a necessary ingredient and unavoidable key factor in delivering quality leadership, non partisan, detribalized inclusiveness, excellent administrative acumen and an all round harmonious symbiosis with all strategic drivers and participatory sectors, in the collective effort to establish, maintain and consolidate MORE good governance for the benefit of the people.
Furthermore, Sheriff Oborevwori’s determination to achieve sets him apart as a leader. He possesses a resolute drive to accomplish his goals and make a positive impact on the lives of the people he represents. This determination, coupled with his dedication to continuous learning, positions him as a formidable force on the political landscape.
As Governor of the oil-rich Delta State, with its diverse tribes and cultural differences, his unwavering focus and perseverance are the hallmarks of a true leader. With these qualities, it is expected that his M.O.R.E Agenda will not encounter administrative bottlenecks associated with governance.
