AS nations grapple with the challenges of finances due to COVID-19 pandemic, Delta State has stood out in the effort to provide some succour for the citizens and ordinary people. As part of this effort, the government initiated a programme aimed at empowering and saving small businesses from collapse under the weight of the pandemic. And, one individual who has been saddled with the responsibility of ensuring that micro, small and medium scale enterprises (MSMSE) remain afloat is Hon. Barr. Orezi Esievo.
The MSMSEs are regarded as the greatest employer of labour all over the world but, like every other sector, the COVID-19 pandemic has also impacted that sector critically.
According to the Secretary of Maris Trust Council, Fidelis Egugbo, “our eminent personality in focus, Esievo, the Executive Secretary of the Delta State Micro, Small and Medium Scale Enterprise Development Agency (DEMSA) shall join the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Delta State, Peter Mrakpor (SAN), Mr Emeka Anthony Odo, Executive Chairman, Enugu State Internal Revenue Service, Dr. Shefiu Abiodun Muritala, Accountant-General of Lagos State; and the Chairman, House Committee on Public Accounts, Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Tony Elekeokwuri to discuss the topic, ‘Effective Tax Administration For The Delivery Of Democratic Dividends’ at this year’s edition of Maris Public Service Lecture.”
He reiterated the fact that a tax expert and seasoned administrator cum politician, Chief Monday Onyeme, will deliver the lecture while a renowned journalist and lecturer, Dr. Kemi Emina, will be the Moderator at the event billed for Wednesday, March 31, 2021.
Egugbo said, “Hon. Barr. Orezi Esievo, has held several positions of trust for the people and has a track record of delivering on assignments given to her.
“Talking about tax as the effects of COVID-19 rage, no doubt, would throw up workable solutions to the myriad of challenges confronting democracies and corporate organizations; and, we are glad that Hon. Esievo has agreed to be one of the discussants.
“We are happy to state that we have continued to receive positive reactions towards the lecture from reputable managers of finances and policy makers. State governors, the Minister of Finance, members of the National Assembly, chairmen of revenue boards of different states of the federation, lovers of democracy, among others, are expected to attend the lecture.
“Governor of Delta, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, will declare the event open and, knowing his antecedents regarding such events, there is no doubt that His Excellency and his colleagues will listen to the tax experts as they brainstorm.
“An Abuja-based real estate consultant cum developer, the Managing Director, Kanma Properties Development Company Limited, Chief Kennedy Kanma, will be the Father of the Day while Dr (Mrs) Comfort Omon-Irabor, Managing Director, Hellyncom Eye Clinic, Warri and Very Rev. Fr. John Konyeke will be the Mother of the Day and the Spiritual Father of the Day, respectively, at the event.
