THE National Institute for Drug and Food Surveillance (Invima) has declared a health alert for a drug, Losartan.

This is a drug used to treat high blood pressure, also known as hypertension or high blood pressure and decrease the patient’s risk of stroke.

In fact, it has been the importer of the drug itself, Novartis of Colombia, which has voluntarily withdrawn all batches of Losartan 50 mg and 100 mg. Below is a list of the countries that have withdrawn the product due to its health hazards:

  • Germany
  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • China
  • Czech Republic
  • Colombia
  • Denmark
  • Spain
  • Finland
  • France
  • Brazil
  • Canada
  • Hungary
  • Vietnam
  • Hong Kong
  • Singapore
  • Switzerland
  • Philippines
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Italy

Losartan has been withdrawn due to the identification of an Azido-type impurity in the active substance of the drug. As reported by the holder of the Invima health registration.

These are the lots registered for Losartan that have been withdrawn from the market:

  • 50mg Kn7841
  • 100 Mg Kd7500
  • 50mg Kn7841
  • 50mg Ky7045
  • 100 Mg Kn4805
  • 50 mg Kv1652
  • 100 Mg Kn4806
  • 100 mg Ky3850
  • 50 mg Lb4144
  • 100 Mg Ky3851
  • 100 Mg Kv0781

Losartan is a drug to treat high blood pressure or hypertension and decrease the patient’s risk of stroke.

This drug is designed for people who have high blood pressure and a heart condition called left ventricular hypertrophy, also known as enlargement of the walls of the left side of the heart.

People with diabetes cannot take Losartan.

Invima has indicated that people who are taking the drug Losartan should not stop the treatment without consulting a doctor. Stopping treatment can have serious consequences on the patient’s health.

One option for people taking Losartan is to check whether the drug they are taking matches the number of batches mentioned above.
