THE Executive Chairman., Delta State Internal Revenue Service, Sir Monday John Onyeme, has expressed confidence that the Internally Generated Revenue of the state at the end of the year 2021 will surpass that of previous years
He said since he assumed office as Chairman, Delta State Internal Revenue Service the board has experienced steady rise in the IGR of the state until last year 2020 when they couldn’t achieve their desire IGR due to the negative impact of the COVID 19 Pandemic and the #ENDSARS protest.
Speaking on Wednesday while delivering a lecture titled:”Effective Tax administration for the delivery of democratic dividends”, at the 2021 edition of Maris Annual Public Service Lecture series, Onyeme emphasised the need for the payment of taxes to be embraced by all, maintaining that the core task of a tax administration are centred on the Implementation and enforcement of tax legislation and regulations.
This activities he said, Includes Identification and registration of taxpayers, processing of tax returns and third party Information, examination of the completeness and correctioness of tax returns, assessment of tax obligations and provision of services to taxpayers.
He said the core purpose of tax and in the context of the lecture was to provide government with the neccessary wherewithal to fund its programmes, adding that tax revenues are neccessary for the success of any government, its a source of revenue generation that is backed with legal powers and every citizens is responsible to pay tax as long as income is earned or profits made from business activities.
While noting that effective tax administration is the key to Infrastructural development, he said the Okowa-led administration has provided democratic dividends through his Smart Agenda in the first tenure while the second tenure focuses on the Stronger Delta Agenda.
He described Governor Okowa as a trailblazer and a classical example of a governor that has made prudent and judicious usage of the taxpayers money and other revenues, revealing that what has been unfolding in the state since 2015 till date is a silent revolution in development and the dispensing of the dividends of Democracy at an unprecedented level to the People.
