The Candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Anambra Central Senatorial District, Senator Uche Ekwunife has raised the alarm over waves of fake news and false allegations against her ahead of the forthcoming general elections in the State.
She wondered why opponents have resorted to politics of calumny targeted at maligning her reputation, instead of focusing on issue based campaigns.
Speaking on Wednesday during an interactive session with newsmen, organized by State Council of Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ekwunife accused politicians of not showing maturity in their campaigns.
She cautioned journalists not to allow themselves to be used in publishing falsehood against politicians.
She said, “Politicians don’t practice politics of maturity, all they do is blackmail to the extent that they forged my letter headed paper to fabricate all manner of falsehood against me. They are out to pull me down and malign my reputation.
“They are even pulling down billboards, tearing and defacing my posters. They forgot that my billboards are in the heart of the people. We can’t continue like this. Just because of election, the opposition are raising false allegations and fake stories against me.
“I am not gunning for the President. I’m vying for the senate under the PDP, I am proud of PDP.”
Describing growing insecurity as major bane in the country, particularly in the South-East, She regretted that the monster is enough to impede growth and development in the region.
She disclosed that legislators in the zone were working out plans towards addressing insecurity, urging traditional rulers and Chairman of Council Areas to partner State government to tackle rising spate of insecurity in the State.
“I have engaged the State Governor to work out steps to approach the issue, and especially in my own Senatorial district, I have synergised with the Police Divisions to see how we can help.
“I have also given some moral boost to Police formation and we have solar system to track down criminals in the State.”
Senator Ekwunife who is seeking reelection listed erosion control works, construction of solar powered street lights, boreholes in communities, women, youths and widows empowerment as among developmental projects she had attracted to her constituency.
