As part of proactive measures to curtail the activities of kidnappers and other criminals who use the cover of encroaching bushes on both shoulders of roads to perpetrate crimes and as escape routes, the Ika North East Local Government, under the watch of Hon.Barr. Victor Ebonka, has embarked on massive clearing of road shoulders and bushes along major roads in the Local Government Area (LGA).
In a statement which broke news of the development, Barr. Ebonka pointed out that removing the bushes/trees which obstruct views and reduce visibility on either side of the roads in the area would help checkmate criminal activities in such areas.
He noted that it would enable security agents, motorists, passers-by and other road users to have a better view of either side of the roads, especially the escape routes and hideouts of the criminal elements.
Ebonka added that the move was designed to enhance overall security in the area both during and after the Yuletide.
Ebonka, who is the state Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, and its National Legal Adviser, however, advised road users in the area to avoid taking advantage of the enhanced visibility inherent in the clearing of the road shoulders to over speed, especially during the Yuletide.
He assured that his administration would continue to collaborate with security agencies in the LGA to enhance the safety of life and property in the area.
